A Website that has caused much attention recently is the newly developed Myspace.com site. Myspace.com attracts people from all ages and backgrounds. The site is somewhere almost the entire world communicates. On this site you can communicate with Denzel Washington, Britney Spears, or your next-door neighbor. The site does not deny anyone. This may sound like the most coolest website, one can communicate with almost anyone in the world.
Although, this site may seem positive in several ways, the website has received much criticism. The criticism generates from the fact users can post accurate or inaccurate information, which can be very accessible to unwanted sexual predators, murderers, and many more unidentifiable people. Many are afraid that these sexual predators could use Myspace as bait to obtain their prey. When one thinks about it, why not? You could become almost anyone in the world and no one will know one’s disgusting identity, not even the police. “Parents are not very proactive in protecting their children from predators on the Internet,” said Daniel Solorio, a domestic violence, child abuse and sex crimes detective who has worked for the Fullerton police department. (Arvidson, 2006) This could be an issue everyone should understand and remember, including parents. Many could have sexual predators right in there front room and will not ever be aware. “Myspace does not require verified information”, Solorio said. (Arvidson, 2006) “ Predators may use a picture found in a trash can from a school and still pose as the student in order to prey on teens around the same age,” Solorio said. (Arvidson, 2006) Everyone in every home should know this vital information. Many children are at a high risk, from being friends with a complete stranger.
Myspace.com has been made aware of this issue, and taken steps to try to improve its security against online predators. Attorney Hemanshu Nigam was appointed to see it that the security has been implemented. “Myspace.com and other Web sites like it, such as MyFace.com, are not geared around safety—they are meant to be a friendly environment to meet people”, “Michael Kessler, vice president of Gaggle .Net which provides many school districts with secure email and blog applications for students, told TechNewsWorld. That means there are few controls or ways to monitor what happens on the Web site, he said”. (Morphy, 2006)
This issue has captured much attention. Particularly, because Myspace.com is a worldwide website that greatly influences our society and American culture. The website has attracted almost everyone and anyone to become a member. In, conclusion, hopefully many will take heed to the information provided on the do’s and don’ts of the website.
